The Founding Members

George Washington Dally
The son of Jeremiah and Mary (Inslee) Dally was born in Woodbridge NJ in 1844. He entered Dartmouth College, Chandler Scientific Course in Sept. 1864 as one of the original seven members and remained two years. He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Previous to entering College he served in the Civil War; he enlisted as a Union officer at the age of 16 in the Fifth Regiment of the New Jersey Volunteers on August 23 1861, and was mustered in as a Private in Company H. He was promoted to Corporal on August 1, 1862, and, when 2nd Lieutenant William J. Rusling of Company K was adavanced to 1st Lieutenant, George W. Dally was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant of Company K to fill the vacancy. He was wounded in the second battle of Bull Run and again at Chancellorsville, VA. He served until January 25, 1864 when he resigned his commission because of disability.
After leaving college he returned to Woodbridge, N.J., and from there accepted a position in Huntington, Long Island. From there he went to New York City with the Thurber Co., wholesale grocers returning to Woodbridge in about 1869 and going into business. In 1876 he returned to New York City as forman in an oil manufacturing concern; in 1877 he transferred to Philadelphia, PA as the superintendent of The American Manufacturing and Exporting Company. He remained in that city for seven years; the was sent to Chicago, Ill., as head of one of the departments of Nelson, Morris and Co., exporting oleomargarine butter in tins to the West Indies. In 1892 he sold out and entered the service of Bulls Head Bazaar, wholesale dealers in horses, etc., as financial manager and mining interest in The New England Improvement Company. He left Bulls Head Bazaar on January 17th 1913 completing nearly 21 years of service with this house, thinking he had earned a rest for the balance of his life.
He was married on June 19th of 1872, to Miss Isabella (Belle) Cutter Hillyer, who died October 11th 1897. He had one son, Lee Hillyer Dally, born July 16th 1875. His last known residence was 202 DeKalb Square, Philadelphia, PA. He was laid to rest March 25th 1924 in West Laurel Hill Cemetary, Bala Cynwyd, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
